                                     BASEBALL

This year we find ourselves without the services of five

of our starters, including both pitchers. However, we have

two of our regulars being tutored in the fine art of pitching.

We have players to fill in the holes left by last year's grad-

uation, but they are short on experience.

After a much better year than our record indicates, the players are very enthusiastic and

want to play good ball. Given enough practice, we should have a fine ball team. We certainly

have a good coach!

On our bench we have players up from the junior team, who would like very much to

prove that they are also good players on the varsity. Out of this group we may even have

some help for our new pitching staff. All in all, this promises to be an interesting season.

                                                 GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The girls' basketball season has started with great enthusiasm. The afternoon

practices have shown the will and desire to keep victory as our goal.

As long as the girls work with our coach, Mrs. Peterson, our team will come

out on top.

Through hard playing and determination we are striving for another victorius

season of basketball, which we know can be obtained by practicing the necessary

fundamentals and teamwork.

                                                       GIRLS' HOCKEY

Once more the hockey sticks, shin guards, goalie pads and hockey shoes are put away

for another season.

Though the enthusiasm for hockey started slowly, as time progressed more of the girls

attended the practices. This we can say was because of the new inspiration our gym teach-

er, Mrs. Peterson, gave to us.

The team this year was also made up of some of the Greer and younger Crest girls,

who came out with hockey sticks a-swinging and enthusiasm high. In spite of the usual

fundamentals, the girls had loads of fun and still learned: the lunge, the drive, the dribble,

long and short corners and all the other necessary seemingly boring drills.

Out of the six games played, the girls kept us the good re-

cord with four games tied, and two lost. As long as the girls keep

their motto, "Play hard, play fair, play as a team," in the back of

their minds, you can be sure of victory in more than one way.

As the years progress, may hockey always remain an

established sport at Greer.

                                                       FOOTBALL 1956

This year saw not the decline of Greer's powerful football machine, but the start of a new team to blaze our way once more to football glory.

Limited to three experienced players, and plagued with injuries, Coach Fischer did an amazing job of molding a team.

It is to the credit of the football players - - both starter and sub alike - - and the fans also, that in the face of this unfamiliar thing called defeat, there was a lack neither of sport-manship nor support for the team.

Perhaps this proves the truth in the words of the Class of '56 in last year's TALIS-MAN: "Football has always been a favorite at Greer. People today say this is because of the great success of the team, but if they looked back in the records they would find Greer teams which did not win a game - - thus this cannot be the answer. Whatever the answer is, in victory or defeat, they leave the game content."

Next year we hope to see the rebuilding of another great Greer team studded with more experienced players. Rather than hear of gridiron success, however, we would like to hear of Greer's continuing sportsmanship and courtesy.

                                                       BASKETBALL

This year's basketball team shows only three lettermen returning, the rest coming up from the junior varsity. However, Mr. Fischer has done an excellent job with the players.

Although we did not start the season too well, we played an inspired game with Mill-

brook, beating them 54-51.

Ed Baker, unable to play this year, has done a very good job making basketball players out of the boys who came out for the junior varsity. They show a lot of talent and should do a fine job for the varsity in the years to come. Here's wishing them good luck.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

To you, Coach, we want to say thanks. We really think you are great!!

Everything you do shows your wonderful way, and your terrific spirit.

Many's the time you have come up with the right thing at just the right time. Though it may have seemed as though we were not grateful for all you have done, we would, at this time, with the greatest sincerity, like to say, "THANKS FOR EVERYTHING."

To you, Mr. George Groh, the class of '57 wish to express our deepest regards. Whenever we needed your help, you would give it, regardless of what you were already doing. Many times you were taken for granted and were never thanked for your help. In parting, we would like to thank you for everything and if we should meet again, we hope you will remember us, for we will always remember you.

FAREWELL

To the students who make this school what it is. It is your school spirit and honor that are known through many sections, so keep the good name of Greer and every day help it to become more highly respected.

To you, the Juniors, we wish luck next year when you take the big step of becom-ing Seniors. No need of pressing the point of class unity because that is one thing that stands out most in your class.

When you enter the Senior classroom, have pride in the position and help the low-er grades, showing them what you stand for.

As we, the Class of '57, walk through the gates of Greer, we know they are not closing behind us. We know they will always welcome us back, because Greer is our home.

Greer has shown us how to live with other people and how to face this big wide world that stands on the other side of the gates. And we thank you for all your love and understanding in our growing years of becoming adults.
