TALISMAN STAFF

To publish the 1957 TALISMAN has been our task

and our pleasure. In the pages that follow we have tried

to convey evidences of the full and busy life we lead here

at Greer.

We hope it will serve as a worthy memorial of the

Class of 1957.

FOREWORD
At the beginning of our nation's history, many people tried to mold the paths to

be followed by others. Only a few of these people became outstanding enough to

be remembered. We, the Senior Class of 1957, have tried to make paths for others

to follow. We have done our best in everything, and in the TALISMAN we'll try to

show what we remember most about Greer School.

We, the Senior Class of 1957, wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation

to you, Mrs. Ruth M. Freitag. You have helped and guided us through our years at Greer.

In many phases of Greer life you have been in the background, but in moments of need

you were ready to give your utmost to help us and the classes that have gone before us.

Through your never-ending guidance and understanding you have helped us to reach our

last steppingstone at Greer and our first steppingstone into the life ahead. Thank you again,

Mrs. Freitag, for all your help in the years past. We know that you will continue to assist

the classes that follow after us for many years to come. And we hope that they will appre-

ciate your help as much as we do.

DEDICATION

To you, Mr. Carmine Di Arpino, we, the Senior Class of '57, wish to show our apprecia-

tion for all your help and guidance to the school and its students. Through your cheerfulness

and hard work we can say that you have given us knowledge and self-assurance to lead us

on our way into this new world we are about to enter.

Though this book may wither and decay in time, the knowledge and guidance you have

given us will never leave our hearts.

May this appreciation be only part of our thanks to you.

A MESSAGE

It is fitting for the 1957 TALISMAN to spotlight the lives of great men and women. From them we can learn many of the ingredients of greatness, such as integrity, industry, mental alertness, self-control, faith in God, and a desire to serve one's fellow men. Long ago (1838) Henry W. Longfellow, in his Psalm of Life, wrote that the
"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time."
We are all tempted at times, however, to turn aside from the rugged path to achievement, and to bow in easy frustration at the false notion that somehow
the truly great lived only far away and long ago.
Perhaps a careful reading of the TALISMAN's pages between the topical dividers will lead us to realize that right at Greer -- yes, here and now -- each of us has an opportunity to come into close association with some great men and women. If we form the habit of looking for the good in those around us, we are bound to find some elements of personal magnitude in the familiar lives of the fellow students, staff members, visitors and friends we see and know from day to day. And, in the process, we may well discover a bit of greatness in our own lives!
It is our hope and aim, for the Class of 1957 and for all students at Greer, that during your stay here you may have helped to develop in real measure some of the qualities of greatness.
